We Tried Starbucks’ Cinnamon Caramel Cold Brew and It’s Undeniably Sweet

featured image

Goodbye, pistachio; hello, Starbucks Cinnamon Caramel Cold Brew.

Spring into spring with Starbucks Cinnamon Caramel Cold Brew! The Pistachio Cream Cold Brew from the winter menu has been shooed back into its shell, and cinnamon caramel cream cold brew is the coffee chain’s new spring beverage.

The Starbucks drink designers must love their jobs. Coming up with a creative new drink or two every season is a pretty sweet gig. And they must have had plenty of time to concentrate on this one because the cinnamon caramel cream cold brew is the only new addition to the Starbucks food-and-drink menu for spring.

What’s in Starbucks’ Cinnamon Caramel Cold Brew?

The new drink swirls cinnamon-caramel-flavored syrup into Starbucks cold brew and tops the whole thing off with cinnamon sweet cream cold foam and a sprinkle of cinnamon dolce topping—which just tasted like ordinary cinnamon, not nearly as good as the salted brown buttery sprinkle from the Pistachio Cream Cold Brew.

Starbucks’ Cinnamon Caramel Cold Brew is available as both a nitro cold brew and a regular cold brew beverage, but unlike the Pistachio Cream Cold Brew, there’s no hot latte version.

Here’s What I Thought

If you had to pick a side, are you on Team Cinnamon or Team Caramel? I’m Team Caramel all the way. Unfortunately for me, it’s the spicy punch of cinnamon that rules the day in this drink. If cinnamon toast were a beverage, this might be it.

Cinnamon aside, my first sip left me with one overwhelming sensation: sweet. The pistachio cream cold brew was nutty and almost a little bitter, but the cinnamon caramel cold brew is the dream drink for anyone with a sweet tooth. Still, I kind of wondered where the caramel had gone. It might have cut the spice of the cinnamon and the overwhelming sweetness with its creamy, mellow goodness.

Starbucks always scores big with the sweet cream topping, which was heavy and thick here, the kind that makes you want to get out a spoon and devour it separately.

I’m a big fan of Starbucks’ repertoire of cream cold brew drinks—the topping and syrup flavors always meld well with the cold brew itself. I think I prefer the Pistachio Cream Cold Brew to the Cinnamon Caramel Cold Brew, probably because the pistachio was a little nuttier and a tad less sweet. But still, this is a solid new Starbucks offering for spring, even if the cinnamon wrestles the caramel to the mat and dominates the flavor.

When Can I Get It?

The Cinnamon Caramel Cold Brew hit Starbucks stores on March 7. But you don’t need to rush to get one. A Starbucks representative tells me the new drink will be on the menu year-round, so this is one you won’t have to hack using the Starbucks secret menu.
